Research Associate in Statistics

Full Time : The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £31,905 - £38,594 per annum depending on skills and experience, inclusive of London Allowance.

The aim of this high-profile, national study commissioned by the Department of Health, is to provide an epidemiological overview of trends in child deaths (aged 1-18yrs) over time in the 4 UK countries. The study will develop new methods to describe child deaths according to clinically meaningful patient groups and underlying conditions, using the child's entire trajectory of hospital admission and death certification data. The work will be carried out in the MRC Centre of Epidemiology for Child Health.

The post holder will develop and validate clinical coding clusters and use these to determine trends in child deaths according to underlying condition and antecedent events. The post holder will be expected to take a leading role in the project, which will have wider relevance for research into child morbidity.

The post is available immediately and is funded until 31/08/2013 in the first instance and is funded by the Departments of Health in the UK, through the Healthcare Quality Improvement Programme.

The post holder must have an MSc in epidemiology, statistics, or other relevant public health science or equivalent level of attainment. The post holder must have research experience of secondary data analysis of large, complex healthcare data sets using standard software packages (e.g. Stata) and experience of writing papers for peer-reviewed journals. It is essential that candidates have a strong working knowledge of research methods in statistics and epidemiology and have strong statistical analytic skills.
